A Steadfast Anchor was composed by Irish hymn writer Naomi Moss, from 2018 to 2020 when the song was then completed to final draft and a live recording was made at Slemish Mountain, Ireland. The beginning of each verse echoes the famous text from Psalm 46: “Be still, and know that I am God”, reminding us that God is our strength, a certain refuge and a present help in the time of trouble and in immediate hardship.

Scripture addresses the reality of suffering in this life. 1 Peter 4 says, “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you…”(12b), “therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing so”(19), and Romans 8:17, “[we are] fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.” Hebrews 4:15-16, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weakness, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need”.

Each verse explores one aspect of suffering: fierce trials, earthly loss, human weakness, fear and despondency. The lyrics of the chorus then point our hope to Christ, a steadfast anchor for our souls; for even in the most desperate moments of life He has promised to sustain and provide for those who find their faith rooted in His life, death and resurrection. This song was written to encourage and comfort through honest lyrics that culminate toward a joyful chorus, to lift and inspire worship of God who is sufficient, even in suffering, loss and failure.
